Do you take the time to read a book? It’s very rare for me to make the time to sit and read something because my brain is thinking about other things I should be doing. Yet, I shouldn’t feel guilty for feeding my brain. Reading is a great way to wind down and learn something new. In this case, I was sent a book called “Off Balance – the American Way of Life” by Dr. Leyla Ali, PharmD.
When this package arrived I noticed that it came directly from the author, her return address label was so pretty and custom. I felt honored to read her book knowing that she took the time to send it to me. She studied pharmacy and she grew up like the majority of us do thinking that doctors and drugs are the only choice. When she began pharmacy school she had an understanding of human health was pretty simple: if you’re sick, the medicine cabinet has a solution. She says that it wasn’t always this way of understanding tho. In the 1930’s there were more choices available. Patients would see any type of practitioner, including medical doctors, herbalists, homeopathic practitioners, acupuncture, and others. Basically without quoting her entire book she reminds you to think a little harder. Not to always aim for the quick fix that only suppresses the problem. Attack your problem at its source rather than to mask it with drugs.
Although I’m open to medication, I’m also open to hear about what she has to say about treating the symptoms. One quote that stood out to me was, “relying on doctors and pharmacists for your complete healthcare is like relying on a pesticide expert to maintain your entire vegetable garden.” Her goal is to create a new awareness of the pitfalls in American healthcare while also providing solid solutions to health conditions and diseases by offering informed choices. Empowerment of truth filled knowledge and not just by the book as doctors do… You have this symptom, you need this prescription. But really, why am I having the symptoms? Is it the food I’m eating? The environment I live in? It triggers many thoughts for me. I can’t wait to finish this book. If your open about hearing another’s train of thought in regards to your health this is the perfect book to read and I highly, highly recommend it.
You can find it HERE on Amazon for about $14.99.
Thank you Dr. Leyla Ali for opening my mind and for giving me new ideas. I’d love to live a long healthy life and this allows me to tap into new resources.
